Qualico will promote and sustain the efficient application of a program for Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) / Hazard Communication Standard (HazCom) to ensure that Workers receive the fullest knowledge and protection in the handling of products that could be harmful to their health. To achieve this goal, responsibilities for the administration of the program shall include, but not be limited to, the following:
Management
Current electronic copies of all Safety Data Sheets (SDS) will be made available to employees. Cooperation is needed from all levels of the workforce to ensure that our Workers receive the necessary information, training and equipment required to fulfill our goal. Strict compliance with the WHMIS / HazCom regulations will ensure that Workers have the fullest protection when handling products that would endanger their health now or later in their life.
Supervisors
Supervisors / Superintendents will also ensure that all controlled product labels are maintained for proper identification of the products. Supervisors / Superintendents will ensure that Workers are trained and certified in WHMIS or HazCom, as appropriate.
Training
All Supervisors, Workers and Contractors that work with or direct others to work with WHMIS / HazCom controlled products must be trained.
Contractors
Contractors will ensure that their Workers who handle, store or use controlled products are:
- Properly trained to identify labels and understand risk phrases.
- Able to understand applicable sections of SDS.
- Trained in emergency procedures that might occur.
- Understanding of problems associated with the handling of controlled products.
Contractors also will:
- Ensure copies of current SDS are provided to the site Supervisor before any controlled product enters the Work Site.
- Obtain up-to-date supplier SDS before product is used or handled.
- Make sure SDS are readily available to all Workers who work with or in proximity of controlled products.
- Ensure that Workers are informed about the content required on SDS and the purpose and significance of the information.
- Ensure that a controlled product or the container of a controlled product has the proper label applied to the item at the time of entry into the Work Site.
- Take measures to ensure that supplier labels are not removed, defaced or altered in the Work Site.
Workers
- All Workers are required to:
- Participate in the training programs and use the information to help them work safely with hazardous materials.
- Inform employers when labels on containers have been accidentally removed or if the label is no longer readable.
- Wear the proper Personal Protective Equipment and protective devices as per the WHMIS label and / or the SDS.
- Report all incidents to the Supervisor / Superintendent or Manager.
