Window and Door Installation
| Purpose |
To protect Workers from injuries associated with the improper handling, lifting and installation of windows and doors by outlining the requirements for safe procedures, hazard controls and proper installation methods. |
| Definition |
Window and Door installation occurs at the end of the framing stage during new home construction and consists of fastening doors and windows to the wood structure. |

This list of potential hazards is not comprehensive. Workers are required to complete a Hazard Assessment prior to starting this task to ensure all hazards are identified and controlled.

Do
- Ensure Workers are trained and competent to use mobile equipment to load and/or unload windows and door to the upper levels.
- Ensure Workers are trained and competent to use Personal Fall Protection System (PFAS).
- Ensure if lifting to upper levels, that the area below is flagged off.
- Ensure Workers complete a hazard assessment prior to starting work and update the document as conditions change.
- Inspect the work site for existing or potential hazards.
- Ensure proper temporary scaffolding or ladders are available if required.
- Ensure proper controls are being used by Workers as per hazard assessment, Safe Job Procedure and Job Hazard Analysis.
Do not
- Allow Workers to operate any power tools, equipment or use fall protection unless properly trained.

Do
- Understand and adhere to relevant training when working with framework, doors, windows and hardware.
- Use all required PPE including a Personal Fall Arrest System (PFAS), when installing windows and doors at heights (as defined by legislation).
- Use specific controls to the installation area, such as restricted access, so other Workers are not put at risk.
- Complete a hazard assessment prior to starting work.
- Follow manufacturers’ specifications and SJP – Window and Door Installation.
- Follow job drawings and specifications.
- Inspect all tools, equipment and material prior to use. Tag ‘out of service’ if there are any defects or malfunctions found.
- Use proper tools for the job and measure appropriately.
- Ask for assistance when installing heavy doors and windows, as required.
- Use proper temporary scaffolding or ladders if required.
- Ensure that the area is as hazard free as possible. Clean up and keep the work site tidy during a job to avoid any unnecessary hazards.
- Ensure that the path from where it was loaded, to where it needs to be is clear and free from waste, debris, and any other hazards prior to loading in doors and windows.
- Secure all materials properly during loading and unloading to prevent shifting, falling or potential injury.
- Ensure that the framework is approved prior to installing hardware, windows and doors.
- Reassess and report to your Supervisor/Superintendent immediately if any changed conditions impact the safety of the task
Do not
- Use damaged tools or equipment.
- Lift heavy objects without help, as per Safe Work Practice – Manual Lifting and Carrying.
- Work at heights without proper fall protection equipment and control measures in place.
- Operate mobile equipment unless you are trained and competent.
