To protect contracted Workers during the installation of second floor joists, floor sheathing, and walls. |
| Definition |
The installation of floor joists, floor sheeting and walls occurs generally during the framing stage of new home construction. |
| Hazards
This list of potential hazards is not comprehensive. Workers are required to complete a Hazard Assessment prior to starting this task to ensure all hazards are identified and controlled.

- SJP – Fall Protection

- End-User Fall Protection Training

Personal Protective Equipment:
- Basic PPE: Safety Footwear, Hard Hat, High Visibility Vest
- Task Specific PPE: Gloves, Safety Glasses, Personal Fall Protection System (PFAS)

Do
- Ensure Workers have valid End-User Fall Protection Training.
- Ensure hazard assessments are completed prior to starting work.
- Ensure Workers are installing or working on the joists from a work platform set up on the floor below.
- Ensure Workers are trained and competent to use the tools or equipment required to complete the task.
Do not
- Allow Workers to operate or use tools and equipment for which they are not trained or deemed competent to use.
- Allow work to proceed if wind speeds exceed 40 km/h or 25 mph.
- Allow Workers to stand, walk, or complete work on the joists. The install must be done from a work platform setup on the floor below.

Do
- Perform a hazard assessment prior to starting work and as conditions change.
- Inspect all tools and equipment prior to use.
- Ensure you are trained and competent to use the tools and equipment required to complete the task.
- Be properly trained and competent to work at heights.
- Be fully conversant with fall protection systems.
- Inspect all fall protection equipment before each use.
- Follow the fall protection plan and use equipment as directed.
- Ensure fall protection equipment is used properly at all times, in accordance with training.
- Report any issues or concerns with fall protection immediately.
- Ensure the area is controlled by using signage, barricades, or caution tape.
- Ensure installation is appropriately followed by manufacturers’ specifications, as well as your site specific drawings and specifications.
- Ensure that you have help from someone when installing large items, such as the joists, floor sheathing, and wall frames, as required.
- Ensure the area is as hazard free as possible.
- Clean up and keep tidy during the job to avoid any unnecessary hazards.
Do not
- Operate tools or equipment without proper training.
- Stand, walk, or complete work on the joists. The install must be done from a work platform set up on the floor below.
- Continue work if wind speeds exceed 40 km/h or 25 mph.
