Housekeeping

Purpose To maintain a safe and healthy environment for all Workers.
Definition Housekeeping refers to keeping work areas neat, orderly, and free of hazards through continuous cleaning and proper material management.
Hazards

This list of potential hazards is not comprehensive. Workers are required to complete a Hazard Assessment prior to starting this task to ensure all hazards are identified and controlled.

Physical:

  • Fall from Heights
  • Flying debris including Silica Dust
  • Pinch points
  • Slips/Trips
  • Heavy lifting
  • Cuts/Lacerations
  • Impalement
  • Other Workers in the area

Chemical: 

  • Spills/Leaks
Controls Engineering: 

  • Properly established access/egress
  • Non-Slip Flooring
  • Waste Management and Waste Disposal Bins

Administrative:

  • Hazard Assessment
  • WHMIS/HazCom
  • Safety Data Sheets
  • Sufficient, well-labeled storage

Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Basic PPE: Safety Footwear
  • Task Specific PPE: Half Mask Respirator with P100 or N95 Mask, Gloves
Work Site Supervisory Responsibility Do

  • Provide training on the housekeeping procedures and expectations of the Work Site.
  • Assign Workers to housekeeping duties at regular intervals.
  • Ensure entrances, exits, stairways, ladders, emergency routes, and access to emergency supplies are always kept clear.
  • Ensure regular removal of debris and waste is taking place.
  • Ensure waste disposal bins area available.
  • Ensure the waste bins are emptied at regular intervals.
  • Maintain sufficient storage and effective labeling.
  • Maintain housekeeping supplies on the Work Site.
  • Correct and educate poor housekeeping behaviour.

Do not

  • Allow the accumulation of debris and waste on the Work Site.
  • Block entrances, stairways, ladders, emergency routes, or access to emergency supplies.
Worker Responsibility Do

  • Conduct a Hazard Assessment prior to starting work.
  • Implement the necessary protective mechanisms and wear PPE appropriate for the hazards identified in the work area.
  • Always maintain a clean and tidy work area.
  • Maintain clear access to entrances, exits, stairways, ladders, emergency routes, and access to emergency supplies are always kept clear.
  • Ensure materials are well-secured when working at elevations to prevent falling materials.
  • Suspend or tape-down cords, hoses, and cables to avoid tripping hazards.
  • Clean up work areas as work progresses.
  • Clean all spills/leaks immediately with appropriate control materials and PPE.
  • Ensure all materials/tools are returned to their designated storage areas at the end of the day.
  • Dispose of waste using appropriate procedures and waste receptacles.

Do not

  • Wait to clean/tidy until the end of the day.
  • Throw garbage or materials from elevators. Lower into containers or install chutes to containers below.
  • Allow combustible materials to accumulate in the work area.
