Controlling Hazards That Cause Slips, Trips, and Falls

Purpose To identify and control the hazards and injuries associated with slips, trips, and falls.
Definition Slips, trips, and falls cause various injuries on worksites such as musculoskeletal injuries, broken bones, concussion, and impalement. These injuries can be avoided by controlling the hazard and keeping work areas neat and tidy.
Hazards

This list of potential hazards is not comprehensive. Workers are required to complete a Hazard Assessment prior to starting this task to ensure all hazards are identified and controlled.

Physical:

  • Slips/Trips
  • Falling objects
  • Cuts/Lacerations
  • Fall from Heights
  • Strain/Sprain
Controls Elimination:

  • Eliminate abrupt changes in walking surface heights

Engineering:

  • Readily available cleaning supplies and tools appropriate for the housekeeping requirements of the work site
  • Waste management and waste disposal systems / procedures
  • Well-marked, accessible, and well-maintained exits, entrances, and roadways
  • Proper installation of guardrails and floor hole coverings
  • Ensure there is adequate lighting on site

Administrative:

  • Hazard Assessment

Personal Protective Equipment:

  • CSA/ANSI approved safety footwear (including non-slip soles)
  • Personal Fall Protection System (PFAS)
Work Site Supervisory Responsibility Do 

  • Provide training on the housekeeping procedures and expectations of the work site.
  • Ensure entrances, exits, stairways, ladders, and emergency routes are kept clear at all times and that ramps are properly installed.
  • Ensure regular removal of debris and waste is taking place and waste disposal bins are available.
  • Ensure guardrails are properly installed in all required locations on the work site

Do not 

  • Allow the accumulation of debris on the work site.
  • Allow workers to work without proper PPE and training.
Worker Responsibility Do 

  • Wear PPE appropriate for the hazards at the work site and the job task.
  • Maintain a clean and tidy workspace.
  • Avoid carrying loads that obstruct vision.
  • Clean all spills and leaks immediately.
  • Ensure all tools and materials are returned to proper storage area.
  • Dispose of waste and debris using appropriate procedure.
  • Follow the SJP when using ladders

Do not 

  • Wait until the end of the day to clean workspace.
  • Work at heights without fall protection.
