Hazards Controls Training
Physical: 

  • Personal health issues that may hinder the ability to communicate if assistance is required
  • Risk of violence or harassment
  • Hazards from vehicles and equipment
  • Inadequate lighting
  • Weather Conditions
  • Overhead work
  • Falling objects
Engineering

  • Radio, cellphone, or equivalent communication device
  • Set up Emergency SOS on cell phone

Administrative:

  • Work Alone Plan
  • Medical Alert Bracelet (if applicable), epinephrine pens, or other medical information for first responders
  • First Aid Kit

Personal Protective Equipment:

  • CSA / ANSI approved footwear
  • Safety glasses
  • Hard hat
  • Hearing protection
  • High visibility safety vest
  • Work alone training
Purpose
To ensure the safety and well-being of Workers performing tasks alone by providing clear guidelines and protocols for hazard identification, communication, and emergency preparedness. Adhering to these procedures minimizes risks, ensures compliance with safety regulations, and promotes a secure working environment.
Safe Job Procedure
Pre-Operation

  • Activate the Work Alone Plan:
    • Ensure a proper Work Alone Plan is in effect before beginning any activities.
  • Understand Job Limitations:
    • Be familiar with job requirements and their limitations when working alone.
    • Do not attempt to complete tasks that are not pre-approved for solo work.
  • Review Safety Documentation. Familiarize yourself with:
    • All applicable Safe Work Practices (SWPs).
    • Safe Job Procedures (SJPs).
    • Job hazard analyses (JHAs).
    • Pre-task hazard assessments (PTHAs).
  • Plan for Emergencies:
    • Review the Emergency Response Plan, site-specific hazard assessments, and any applicable legislation.
  • Inspect Equipment and PPE:
    • Ensure all equipment, materials, and PPE are in proper working order.
    • Tag and remove out-of-service (defective) items and never use them.
  • Check the Communication Device:
    • Test your communication device to confirm it is operational, sufficiently charged, and has service coverage.

During Operation

  • Maintain Check-In Communication:
    • Regularly check in with your work alone buddy or direct report at scheduled times.
    • At each check-in, establish a clear time for the next contact.
  • Stay Aware of Changing Conditions. If conditions change:
    • Pause work and reassess the hazards.
    • Eliminate or control additional hazards before proceeding.
    • Inform your work alone buddy or direct report of the changes, especially if tasks require additional time or precautions.

Post Operation

  1. Secure the Site:
    1. Lock up or restrict access to the work area if required to protect public safety.
  2. Notify Completion:
    1. Notify the appropriate personnel (work alone buddy or direct report) that tasks are complete and report that you are leaving the Work Site.
