Purpose
To protect Workers from injuries associated with the improper handling, lifting and installation of windows and doors by outlining the requirements for safe procedures, hazard controls and proper installation methods.
Safe Job Procedure
Pre-Operation

  1. The Production Department and the Window Manufacturer will decide in advance which windows are to be shipped with or without glazing.
  2. The Supervisor/Superintendent and the framers installing the windows will pre-determine if a man lift is required based on weight, size, site location and conditions or the windows or doors to be installed.
  3. Ensure the area below the second-floor or roof installations is blocked or taped off as a controlled no access zone.
  4. All Workers on the roof must tie off using a Personal Fall Arrest System (PFAS) attached to a suitable and approved anchor point before beginning installation work.

During Operation First Floor Window/Door Installation

  1. The windows or door are manually carried with suction cups or lifting straps from the garage to the opening by one or two Workers.
  2. If the window is on a walkout unit or above the legal limit of 3 metres/10 feet in Canada or 2 metres/6 feet in the United States, then a Personal Fall Arrest System (PFAS) is required, and the steps in the second-floor window installations section below should be followed.
  3. The Worker(s), depending on the window or door size, will lift the unit into a pre-prepped opening and the Worker inside of the house will shim, level, and centre the unit in its opening, while the other Worker(s) on the outside ensure the window or door unit does not tip out.
  4. When the window or door unit is plumb and level, the Worker(s) outside will fasten it in place.
  5. Repeat this procedure until all first-floor windows and doors are installed.

Second Floor Window/Door Installation

  1. The windows are carried from the garage to the inside of the house and up the stairs using two or more Workers while using the proper lifting techniques, suction cups and lifting straps.
  2. The window is maneuvered through the window opening using suction cups or straps to one or two Workers on a tied off or stabilized ladder depending on the size.
  3. The window unit will be set into the pre-prepped opening and the Worker inside of the house will shim, level, and centre the unit in its opening, while the other Worker(s) on the outside ensure the window does not tip out.
  4. When the window or door is plumb and level, the Worker(s) outside will fasten it in place.
  5. Repeat this procedure until all second-floor windows are installed.

Second Floor Window/Door Installation with Equipment

When windows cannot be deglazed at the factory or onsite and they are too large or too heavy to safely use standard methods, a zoom boom or other vertical lift machine with an approved man lift basket is to be used.

  1. Workers will manually carry the windows to the lift location on the ground below the window openings.
  2. Inspect the equipment including the Personal Fall Arrest System (PFAS) and the zoom boom prior to use
  3. Workers will then climb into the man basket of a zoom boom and tie off to its guardrail with a Personal Fall Arrest System (PFAS) and ride up to the installation location.
  4. The window is raised and set by two Workers into the pre-prepped opening and a third Worker inside will shim, level, and centre the unit in its opening, while the other Workers on the outside ensure the window unit does not tip out.
  5. When the window or door unit is plumb and level, the Worker(s) outside will fasten it in place.
  6. Repeat this procedure until all second-floor windows are installed.

Installing Windows from a Roof

  1. All Workers on the roof must tie off using a Personal Fall Arrest System (PFAS) attached to a suitable and approved anchor point.
  2. Repeat the steps for second-floor window/door installation.

Post Operation

  1. Ensure all installed windows and doors are properly fastened, plumb, and level
  2. Remove all suction cups, lifting straps, and installation equipment from the work area.
  3. Clean up debris, broken glass or packing material from the work site.
  4. Ensure ladders are properly secured and stored and the zoom boom/lift equipment is safely parked and shut down.
  5. Remove fall protection equipment and inspect for any damage before storing. If damage is identified, report it to your Supervisor/Superintendent and tag the equipment “out of service.”
