Purpose
To establish the sequential steps to follow when operating a hand-held circular saw in residential construction communities, to minimize injury and material damage risks to Workers, other trades, visitors, and the public.
Safe Job Procedure
Pre-Operation

  1. Inspect the saw for damage, missing guards, or loose components
  2. Ensure blade guard, riving knife, and anti-kickback devices are in place
  3. Confirm work area is clean, well-lit, and free of trip hazards
  4. Verify electrical connections are safe and protected by GFCI.

During Operation

  1. Adjust blade height so teeth are just above the material being cut.
  2. Use the rip fence or miter gauge for all cuts — never cut freehand.
  3. Maintain a balanced stance with feet positioned firmly on the ground.
  4. Keep hands out of the blade path; use push sticks for narrow pieces.
  5. Stand to the side of the blade, not directly behind, to avoid kickback injuries.
  6. Feed material smoothly and evenly — never force it through the blade.

During Operation – Cutting

  1. Focus attention on the cutting process; avoid distractions.
  2. Never remove cut-offs or scrap near the blade while running.
  3. Stop the saw if adjustments or clearing are needed.
  4. Do not attempt to cut warped, twisted, or improperly supported stock.

Post Operation

  1. Turn off the saw and wait until the blade has come to a complete stop before leaving the workstation.
  2. Disconnect power before cleaning or changing blades.
  3. Clean work area, remove debris, and store tools properly.
  4. Report any defects or malfunctions to the Supervisor immediately.
