Physical:

  • Carbon Monoxide detector (as required)
  • Headlamps
  • Work Alone training
  • Inspections training
  • Review and understanding of Violence and Harassment Policy
  • Refer to applicable SJPs/SWPs regarding work being inspected
Purpose
To guide and standardize the safe practices and protocols during safety inspections conducted at the site. It ensures health and safety standards are upheld and provides clear procedures for inspectors to identify hazards, protect workers, and document compliance or violations.
Safe Job Procedure
Pre-Operation

  1. Before Arriving at the Work Site:
    1. Communicate Your Plans:
      1. Inform the Regional Safety Manager or Construction Manager of your destination and planned activities.
      2. Activate your Work Alone Plan and ensure it is being followed.
  2. Travel Safely to the Site:
    1. Follow your work schedule and travel to the Work Site by vehicle.
  3. Upon Arrival at the Work Site:
    1. Put on Required PPE:
      1. Before exiting your vehicle, ensure you are wearing all required PPE and that it is properly adjusted.
  4. Remain Vigilant Near Vehicles and Equipment:
    1. Make eye contact with operators of onsite vehicles or heavy equipment while approaching the site to ensure awareness of your presence.
  5. Check in With the Site Supervisor:
    1. Locate and inform the site Supervisor of your arrival.
  6. Notify Workers at Heights:
    1. Inform any Workers performing tasks at heights that you intend to enter the building. This ensures they remain vigilant and avoid creating falling debris dangers.
  7. Stay Alert in Hazardous Areas:
    1. Be mindful of your surroundings. Avoid walking on or near debris and unguarded openings and steer clear of other hazards.

During Operation

  1. Identify Yourself:
    1. Introduce yourself to onsite Workers and clearly state you are conducting a safety inspection.
  2. Record Unsafe Conditions or Acts:
    1. Use the electronic inspections checklist to document unsafe conditions and actions.
    2. Take pictures of hazards and violations for evidence.
  3. Enforce PPE Compliance:
    1. If Workers are not wearing the required PPE, instruct them to leave the Work Site until they comply with PPE requirements.
  4. Report Hazards and Immediate Actions:
    1. Immediately notify the site Supervisor or Superintendent of hazards that require urgent attention.
    2. Ensure that high-severity items are corrected promptly while you observe their resolution.
  5. Emergency Situations: Handling Violence or Hostility:
    1. If any Workers become violent, hostile, or aggressive toward you, and you feel your safety is at risk:
      1. Leave the Work Site immediately and call 911.
      2. Report the incident to the Regional Safety Manager without delay.
  6. Safety Notes:
    1. Always follow the Work Alone Plan and Violence & Harassment Policy during inspections.
    2. Maintain open communication with supervisors and Workers while focusing on your personal safety.
    3. Stay vigilant for hazards, particularly unguarded openings and falling debris.

Post Operation

  1. Submit the Inspection Report:
    1. Complete your inspection documentation using the electronic system.
    2. Submit the report once all data is entered.
  2. Leave the Site Safely:
    1. Follow the same safety procedures upon departure that you followed when arriving (e.g., maintaining awareness around vehicles and hazards).
  3. Monitor and Follow-Up on Violations:
    1. Track outstanding safety violations and update the electronic inspection system as corrective actions are completed.
