Purpose
To establish the sequential steps to follow when operating a gas-powered snow blower, in order to minimize the risk of injury and property damage to Workers, trades, visitors and the public during snow removal activities on site.
Safe Job Procedure
Pre-Operation – Hazard Assessment

  1. Check temperature, wind conditions and visibility. Obtain adequate lighting if working at dawn, dusk, or evening hours.
  2. Walk the area. Confirm work area is clear of obstacles, debris, and people.
  3. Mark or remove construction materials and tools from snow removal path.
  4. Complete or update your hazard assessment.

Pre-Operation – Inspect Snow Blower

  1. Check fuel level (gas engines) and add fuel if needed (cold engine).
  2. Inspect the snow blower for damage, missing guards, or fluid leaks.
  3. Check the auger for damage and foreign objects.
  4. Verify the discharge chute rotates freely and the deflector adjust appropriately.
  5. Ensure safety controls and interlocks are functional.
  6. Check fuel or electrical supply and ensure GFCI protection for electric units.

Pre-Operation – Don PPE

  1. Put on safety glasses, hearing protection, insulated gloves and boots. Adjust clothing layers for the weather.
  2. If working in areas with vehicular or equipment traffic, the outermost garment must be high visibility.
  3. Verify traction. Put on cleats if slippery conditions are identified.

Starting the Snow Blower

  1. Follow manufacturer’s instructions for starting.
  2. Start outdoors or in a well-ventilated area only (for gas-powered units).
  3. Set controls to idle or low speed when starting.
  4. Allow the equipment to warm up according to manufacturers’ recommendations.
  5. Set speed and auger height (if adjustable) according to the work surface and snow depth.
  6. Allow at least 3 centimeters / 1-inch of ground clearance when clearing snow from an area of gravel or crushed rock.
  7. Set discharge chute away from people, vehicles or property. Set deflector angle to control throwing angle.

During Operation

  1. Operate at a steady, controlled pace to avoid overloading the machine
  2. If there is much snow, start with light, overlapping passes, rather than full-width cuts.
  3. Maintain a firm grip and stable footing while operating; keep feet away from auger.
  4. Discharge snow away from people, vehicles, and buildings
  5. Use caution near roads, driveways, or occupied homes.
  6. Be alert for vehicles and heavy equipment. Make sure you are seen by wearing high vis garments and a headlamp.
  7. Take regular breaks to prevent fatigue and cold weather injuries (e.g., frost bites, strains).

During Operation – Clearing Blockages

  1. Turn off the engine, disconnect power (if electric or battery) and wait for all moving parts to stop.
  2. Use a clearing tool or stick to remove packed snow or ice from the chute or auger
  3. Never use hands or feet to clear obstructions

Post Operation

  1. Turn off the engine, disconnect power (if electric or battery) and wait for all moving parts to stop.
  2. Turn of fuel valve if equipped.
  3. Clean off snow and ice buildup.
  4. Allow the machine to cool before refueling or storing.
  5. Store the snow blower in a dry area.
  6. Do not store gas inside homes/storage areas.
  7. Report any equipment defects or maintenance needs to the Supervisor.
