Rights of Workers – Canada

As a Worker, you have the right to a safe and healthy workplace. This includes the right to:

  • Refuse dangerous work if you have reasonable grounds that the work is a danger to yourself or the health and safety of another Worker. You must report any refusal to your direct report.
  • Know about safety and health hazards at your Work Site.
  • Participate in the health and safety programs in your workplace.
  • Protection; the Worker has the right to tell their direct report, committee or Health and Safety Representative about their concerns. The Worker is protected from retaliation for reporting unsafe work or requesting training or explanation to complete a task safely.

Responsibilities of Workers

As a Worker, you have the responsibility to:

  • Attend an orientation training session prior to commencing work.
  • Read, understand, and comply with the Safety and Health Program and all Applicable Legislation.
  • Develop or take part in a hazard assessment as required.
  • Assist in the development of Safe Work Practices and Safe Job Procedures.
  • Review and follow all necessary Safe Work Practices and Safe Job Procedures.
  • Understand and follow the Safety Data Sheets (SDS) when using controlled products.
  • Be Fit for Work in order to fulfill your task safely.
  • Wear all Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required by Applicable Legislation and the Qualico Health and Safety Program.
  • Report all unsafe conditions, near misses, incidents and injuries to Supervisor as soon as possible.
  • Contact your Supervisor/Superintendent if you are unsure of Job Duties; only perform tasks that you are qualified/trained for.
  • Refuse and report unsafe work; ensure corrective action is taken prior to resuming work.
  • Take every reasonable precaution to protect yourself and the health and safety of other Workers; maintain a safe work environment at all times.
  • Maintain good housekeeping practices.
  • Know the location and use of all first aid, emergency, and safety equipment on the Work Site. If you are trained in first aid you may be needed for the Emergency Response Plan.
  • Be familiar with the Emergency Response Plan.
  • Attend and actively participate in all health and safety meetings, as required.
  • Cooperate with Senior Leadership, Managers, Supervisors/Superintendents, and Regulatory Bodies.
  • Take your health and safety responsibilities seriously; everyone is affected by your actions.
