Emergency Response Procedure
Weather Condition Terminology:
Visit Environment Canada for up-to-date information on tornado conditions, storm maps and weather warnings.

A Tornado Warning – Take Action: An urgent message that a tornado has been spotted in the area covered either visually by someone on the ground or via radar. This will be updated regularly so you can stay informed and take appropriate action.

A Tornado Watch – Be Aware: An alert that identified that weather conditions are favorable for a tornado in the area covered under the tornado watch. You do not need to take cover, but you should keep an eye out on the conditions and stay near a radio, tv, or weather radio. A watch may upgrade to a Warning as certainty increases about the path and strength of the storm system.

Weather Advisory: An alert issued for specific weather events that are less severe but could still significantly affect the public.

Special Weather Statement: An alert that is the least urgent type, that is issued to let you know conditions are unusual and could cause concern.

Tornado Procedure:

In the event or a tornado, follow these steps.

  • If in the office at the time of the tornado, notify the Fire Marshal.
  • The Fire Marshal will then notify all Workers to immediately seek shelter and muster to the lowest level of the building or area.
    • OFFICE: This could include a lower-level parking area or the basement of the building and get under a heavy desk or workbench or sit next to a wall and cover your head with your arms / hands.
    • Move to an interior room / hallway; put as many walls between you and the outside of the building and stay away from windows.
  • Once you have arrived at the designated tornado muster point, report to your Fire Marshal to ensure that they can account for all individuals.
  • Do not use elevators; you could be trapped in the elevator if power is lost.
  • Do not stay in large open rooms.
  • Do not stay around glass such as windows or skylights.
  • After the tornado, wait for further instructions from the Fire Marshal.
  • If on site at the time of the tornado, seek shelter.
    • FIELD: Get out of your vehicle, as they can easily be tossed around; do not try to outrun a tornado.
    • If caught outside, lie flat on the ground, and cover your head with your hands. Seek shelter in a ditch or low-lying area.
  • Be aware of flying debris, your hard hat can be used to protect your head.
  • After the tornado, wait for further instructions or wait until it is safe to stand up.
