Emergency Response Procedure
Operational emergencies can include a Power Outage or being Trapped in an Elevator. Below are procedures for these operational emergencies.

Power Outage Procedure:

  • Emergency lighting will come on in the building if there is a power outage.
  • Notify your Property Manager, Regional Vice President and the Fire Marshal.
  • They will contact the local hydro / power company to report the power outage and get an update on when the power will be restored to the area.
  • Workers are to remain in the building until they are communicated with.
    • If power is not restored, the Regional Vice President will determine if / when Workers will be released from the building.

If You Are Required to Evacuate: 

  • All Workers shall immediately proceed to carry out an orderly evacuation of the building to the appropriate muster point.
    • Please consult your regional office for relevant muster points.
  • Once you are outside, report from the muster point to the Fire Marshal, to ensure they can account for all individuals.
  • Ensure all injuries have been treated by a trained first aider or medical professional.
  • Wait for further instructions regarding re-entry of the building or other instructions.

Trapped in an Elevator Procedure: 

  • Remain calm.
  • If the elevator stops between floors, press the call button inside of the elevator to seek help.
    • The call button will signal the elevator company who is on call 24/7.
    • A technician will be dispatched within 30 minutes to the location.
    • If you do have your cell phone available, you can call reception to ask for assistance.
  • You can also bang on the door to get the attention of other Workers outside of the elevator, to let them know you are stuck inside the elevator.
  • Report all elevator malfunctions to your Property Manager or Fire Marshal.
