Emergency Response Procedure
A Pandemic can be defined as a widespread occurrence of an infectious disease over a whole country or the world at a particular time.

The following steps are essential in creating a pandemic response plan:

Assess the risk(s) at your Work Site:

  • Identify items that could increase the risks for all individuals, this could include:
    • Consider where individuals gather, such as lunchrooms, meeting rooms or work sites.
    • Consider the job tasks and processes where individuals may be exposed to the infectious disease.
    • Identify surfaces that individuals may touch often including hardware, machinery, tools, and equipment.

Develop and Implement Policies / Protocols to Reduce the Risks:

  • Develop appropriate policies to manage your Work Site. This can include who is to be at the Work Site, how to address illnesses that arise at the Work Site and how Workers can be kept safe in the adjusted working conditions.
  • Policies will be created in conjunction with the appropriate parties including Management, Human Resources and Health and Safety.
  • Review industry-specific protocols and other applicable resources to identify if they are applicable to implement at your Work Site. Additional protocols may need to be established if the posted protocols don’t address all the risks to your Workers.
  • Reducing the risk can include:
    • Limit the number of people at your Work Site. (Engineering)
    • Create barriers or partitions in work areas to create distance between individuals.
    • Identify rules and guidelines and communicate the rules and guidelines through training and signage.
    • Train and use appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to reduce the transmission of the infectious diseases.

Develop Communication Plans and Training:

  • Establish and communicate a training plan to ensure everyone is trained in the Work Site policies and procedures.
  • Post signage at the Work Site that includes restrictions, occupancy limits, effective hygiene practices, etc.

Monitor your Work Site and Update Plans as Necessary:

  • Conditions constantly evolve during a pandemic.
  • Ensure that the policies and procedures are reviewed frequently and updated, as required.
  • Ensure Workers know who to go to, to bring up health and safety concerns. This can include your regional HRBP and / or regional Health and Safety Team.

The information in this Emergency Response Procedure is generic. Company and Government Directives will be established and communicated for each pandemic as they occur.
