| Active Shooter, Active Killer, Violent Intruder and Active Assailant are all labels to describe an individual actively engaged in killing or attempting to kill people in a confined and populated area. In most cases, active shooters use firearms and there is no pattern or method to their selection of victims.
Active Shooter situations are unpredictable and evolve quickly. Active shooting situations can be short in duration and are often over before law enforcement arrives on the scene. Therefore, individuals must be prepared both mentally and physically to deal with an active shooter. Active Shooter Procedure: In an Active Shooter class, the process of A.D.D. (Avoid, Deny, Defend) is taught as the best way to protect yourself and those around you in an active shooter scenario. Look around your office area and the rest of the building and develop a plan based on Avoid, Deny and Defend. Avoid (Evacuate): Having a plan to react quickly requires paying attention to your surroundings and understanding your environment. Keep an eye out for doorways, windows or stairs and develop a plan of how you are going to get out in event trouble starts. Get out as quickly as you can and call 911 when it is safe to do so. Deny (Hide): When it is difficult or impossible to get out of the area, look for ways to ensure distance is established between yourself and the threat. Attempt to be as quiet as possible, including silencing your phone or other items that may make noise. For Example: Ensuring doors are closed and locked and turn off the lights in the area if possible. Defend (Fight): If you cannot avoid the threat or deny access to the location, be prepared to defend yourself if needed. Once in a safe area, ensure that you call 911 and provide as many details of the Active Shooter as possible. It is important to remember that when law enforcement first arrives, the victim is not their priority, the assailant is their priority.
