Emergency Response Procedure
NOTE: Falling from heights or elevated work surfaces can result in serious bodily trauma and is therefore considered a critical medical condition. It is strongly recommended that all Workers subjected to a fall from heights or elevated work surfaces seek medical attention.

Rescue Procedure:

Follow these steps based on the Worker’s Condition:

Unconscious:

  • Contact 911 immediately.
  • Conduct a Hazard Assessment to prevent any further injury to the casualty.
  • Attempt to rescue the Worker, as per the rescue and fall protection plan.

Conscious:

  • Call 911 immediately.
  • Assess the Worker’s condition and conduct a Hazard Assessment to determine if self or mechanically aided rescue is to be attempted.
    • If the Worker has suspension trauma straps, get them to use them. This will relieve pressure from the legs, transferring it to the hips.
    • If the rescue cannot be performed in a prompt manner, have the Worker continually move their legs in a pumping motion to reduce the risk of venous pooling; only if they do not have any leg injuries.
  • Once the Worker has been brought down to a safe location, have them sit in the most comfortable position.
  • Continue to monitor the Worker for injuries and shock.
  • As a first aider, treat any life-threatening conditions.
  • Wait for Emergency Services to arrive on site.
