Boom Truck – Lifting of Wood-Framed Walls

Purpose Protecting Workers from injuries and accidents associated with lifting wood framed walls with boom trucks.
Definition A boom truck is a hydraulic crane which allows Workers to lift heavy, unconventionally shaped items.
Hazards

This list of potential hazards is not comprehensive. Workers are required to complete a Hazard Assessment prior to starting this task to ensure all hazards are identified and controlled.

Chemical:

  • Hydraulic leaks

Physical:

  • Tip over or boom collapse
  • Electrocution – Contact with overhead powerlines
  • Electrocution – Environmental, storm
  • Crush/striking hazards – pinch points, rotating arm, dropping suspended loads, materials fall off deck, and rigging
  • Fall from heights
  • Weather Conditions
  • Collisions (people, property, and other vehicles)
Controls Engineering:

  • Outriggers and outrigger pads
  • Proper site selection for outriggers

Administrative:

  • Emergency Response Plan (ERP)
  • Safe Work Practice (SWP)
  • Hazard Assessment
  • Lift plan
  • Pre-use and annual non-destructive equipment inspection
  • Know and respect the load chart limitations
  • Adequate operator training for the equipment being used
  • Follow the Safe Limits of Approach for overhead powerlines
  • Use of a spotter
  • Spill kit
  • Stop work if thunder follows less than 30 seconds after lightning.
  • Reliable weather-monitoring tools (Environment Canada, AccuWeather, etc.)

Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Task-Specific PPE: Hi-visibility apparel
Work Site Supervisory Responsibility Do

  • Ensure PPE is being worn.
  • Ensure SWP (if Contractor) and SJP (if Employee) are followed.
  • Ensure an Emergency Response Plan is in place and communicated to all workers and contractors.
  • Ensure a hazard assessment has been completed.
  • Ensure an equipment inspection has been completed.
  • Ensure a lift plan has been completed.
  • Ensure outriggers have been properly extended and placed on a solid, undisturbed surface.
  • Ensure the safe limits of approach are being respected.

Do not

  • Allow lifting with the crane/boom truck when wind speeds reach 40 km/h or 25 mph.
  • Walk under the wall assembly while it is being lifted.
  • Walk into the swing radius of the crane or boom truck while in operation.
  • Allow loads to pass over occupied vehicles, homes or pedestrians.
Worker Responsibility Do

  • Ensure the equipment received non-destructive testing in the last 12 months and that the inspection tag is affixed to the machine.
  • Perform a pre-trip vehicle inspection of the crane truck
  • Complete a lift plan.
  • Establish a ‘control zone’ for those authorized to work in the immediate area.
  • Know the voltage of overhead powerlines and respect the safe limits of approach.
  • Deploy outriggers (if so equipped) on solid ground.
  • Use a spotter to monitor the proximity to overhead lines or in tight quarters.
  • Set up a ladder and maintain the three-point contact rule when unhooking lifting straps.
  • Return the crane/boom truck to the traveling position.
  • Use the controls to lift the outriggers off the ground.

Do not

  • Lift with boom truck when wind speeds reach 40 km/h or 25 mph.
  • Allow anyone under a suspended load.
  • Rig a crane on an unstable surface.
